Berala Public in Western Sydney is getting kids excited about exercise and teaching them heart healthy habits that will last a lifetime!
Turning your students into Heart Heroes is easier than you think. Just ask Ashleigh Davis from Berala Public – They ran the Jump Rope for Heart program for the first time in Term 3 this year and were the driving force behind the school's success. Not only did the students raise over $1,000 and completed over 12 hours of skipping, but they also used the program to elevate other school initiatives.
“Our students are also looking at initiatives to come to school on time so skipping was one of the ways we could do that. When the kids come to school early there is a couple of days a week where they can skip in the hall.” - Ashleigh Davis, Jump Rope for Heart school coordinator
Ashleigh wants to inspire other teachers to get involved so more Australian kids can learn the importance of cardiovascular heart health and fitness in a super fun way!
Miss Davis’ top three tips for skipping success:
- Make a timetable before jumping into the program: Map out what days you’re going to run it and have a plan as to what students will do on each day.
- Have fun and get involved: Students love it when teachers are up on stage having a skip. The more teachers who can get involved with a lot of energy, the better!
- Take advantage of the teacher portal: It has all the information you need including information for parents and ready-made resources to send straight home, so parents know exactly what's involved.
The iconic, 40-year-old program not only helps raise funds for life-changing heart research, but it also provides an accessible program for the next generation of heart heroes to help stay healthy and active. Ashleigh explains why Jump Rope for Heart is so important to her, while reminiscing about her time as Heart Hero.
“It’s a really great initiative, the Heart Foundation is always something I have been closely linked to, I was a Jump Rope for heart skipper as well as a child and I think it’s super important to be able to teach our kids the importance of cardiovascular health and fitness and it’s just a super fun way to do it” - Ashleigh Davis, Jump Rope for Heart school coordinator
